The whole idea of sustainable tourism is just drivel, i mean its not like you can put travel and tourism up their with saving the rain forest… When people start talking about litter and solar panels it proves my point.
If hotels want to make themselves greener, well thats a different matter all together – but the cost tends to be prohibitive and holidaymakers wont pay the extra.
Here is a debate at the travel foundation –
Responding to a suggestion that Abta should tell agents to direct people to greener holidays, Tanzer said it was not an agent’s job to decide what type of holiday customers should have.
During a debate with Abta chief executive Mark Tanzer on the future of sustainable tourism. Moore said: “We must counter the idea in some operator members’ minds that sustainability is not relevant if they are selling villas in Tuscany – there are elements of sustainability that are relevant even in Tuscany, such as litter or solar heating.”
Moore said the definition of sustainability was easy to grasp. “Two years ago the travel industry was accused of going into places and destroying much of the infrastructure,” he said. “Sustainability is maintaining or improving it.”
Instead, the industry should ensure its supply chain was more sustainable, and Abta was encouraging this with its Travelife system, which graded hotels on environmental performance.
The Travel Foundation announced at the AGM that it had started a five-year partnership with the Cyprus Tourism Organisation to run projects that benefit local people, conserve the island’s environment and promote local culture.
Projects include the development of minimum standards for hotels to reduce water and energy use on the island, as well as stimulate rural
enterprise and to cut the amount of waste from tourism businesses that goes into landfill.
The foundation won the animals and environment category at the Charity Awards last week.
